ABSTRACT
he article addresses the case of Rudolf Höss, the German
commandant of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp
Auschwitz-Birkenau, before the International Military Tribunal in
Nuremberg. An important aspect of the work is the multifaceted
perspective on the accused. On one hand, Höss is described
through the prism of his own memoirs, collected and published as
an autobiography; on the other hand, the article draws on studies
that include the accounts of former prisoners. A key source material
is the transcript of Rudolf Höss’s interrogation by prosecutors and
defense attorneys. The aim of the article is to present the historical
facts concerning the role of the Auschwitz commandant in
the entire process of German genocide and to show the scale of
the crimes committed in the camp. The article raises awareness
of the consequences of Nazi ideology, demonstrates the mechanisms
of operation within concentration camps, and builds historical
consciousness as well as remembrance of the victims. The author
analyzes Höss’s attitude, citing his explanations as well as his
alternating lack of remorse and attempts at justification. This analysis
prompts reflection on the limits of humanity and demonstrates the
consequences of hatred, propaganda, and dehumanization.
