ABSTRACT
Over the past thirty years, all the Nordic countries have established
state mechanisms designed to combat gender discrimination
and ensure equal opportunities for all members of society. These
mechanisms comprise, on the one hand, a broad network of
institutions and posts dedicated to promoting gender equality
policies, and on the other, a system of anti-discrimination legislation
underpinning social security. The equality mechanisms also include
state-funded and organisationally supported gender research
networks, established in every Scandinavian country and actively
cooperating with one another. The gender dimension within the
state governance system has taken on new characteristics: women
have begun to participate more actively in the country’s governance
and political life, in the activities of women’s social organisations,
have increasingly stood as candidates for state governing bodies, and
have advocated for equal rights with men. In this way, significant
representation of women in state governing bodies has been
achieved. All these achievements by women differ significantly from
the position they held in the past
